Washington, DC (May 17, 2016) – Today, the Sweetener Users Association (SUA) welcomed action taken by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to increase raw sugar supplies to meet market demand. The association released the following statement.

“We welcome the action taken today by USDA to increase raw sugar supplies by 200,000 tons. This is an important step forward as part of the agency’s mandate to ensure adequate supplies of sugar at reasonable prices. Based on market demand, this is a much-needed increase.

“Given the uncertainty in the U.S. sugar market caused by America’s broken sugar policy, U.S. sweetener users will be keeping a close eye on the supply situation over the next few months to assess the need for additional imports.

“We applaud the efforts of a bipartisan group of lawmakers, led by Sen. Shaheen and Rep. Pitts, in pressing USDA to increase the tariff rate quota for raw sugar.”
