Experts to Outline Key 2025 Farm Bill Reforms to Make the U.S. Sugar Program Work Better for All Stakeholders
Washington, D.C. (February 25, 2025) – The International Sweetener Colloquium, co-hosted by the Sweetener Users Association (SUA) and the International Dairy Foods Association, features a discussion of the 2025 farm bill today. Experts will forecast the key issues in the bill and take a deeper dive into sugar policy reform.
Bill O’Conner, an Agriculture Policy Expert at Watkinson Miller PLLC, will moderate the session, which will explore the challenges and opportunities Congress faces in finalizing a new farm bill. The panel will highlight a promising compromise path that could make it easier for Congress to modernize sugar policy.
“The farm bill that passed the House Agriculture Committee last year took important steps toward ensuring the U.S. sugar program works for all stakeholders,” said O’Conner ahead of the session. “Common-sense reforms included in the bill, like adjusting tariff rate quotas and updating the definition of ‘refined’ sugar to match current industry standards, will help reduce inefficiencies that drive up sugar costs for all stakeholders,” he noted.
Congress has the opportunity to implement sensible sugar program reforms in the next farm bill. Smart sugar policy will better protect American companies and consumers from high prices and ensure our farm and food economy is well positioned to grow into the future.
